Surgery Scheduler/Authorization Specialist Full-Time - Surgery
Purpose of Job: The purpose of the Authorization Specialist is to work closely with patients, providers, and staff to process prior authorization requests, process patient requests, complete patient follow-up, and ensure quality performance activities are initiated, monitored and completed. This position shall report to their supervisor of day to day operations of the clinics and surgery center, and monitor patient services to include prior authorizations and scheduling management. The Authorization Specialist will coordinate with providers, Surgery Director and Business Office Manager as needed to ensure patient needs are met and hospital or surgery center operations are completed according to regulation and policy.

Essential Functions of the Job:
• Monitor and address patient care related work flows to ensure a positive patient experience to include:
o Ensuring positive patient interactions;
o Ensuring patient needs are promptly and thoroughly addressed with specific focus on follow-up phones calls with authorization updates, appointment updates and referral updates;
• Assist patients and providers to process prior authorizations, and other service needs;
• Arrange and coordinate prior authorizations to include contacting physician’s offices and completing follow-up with patient;
• In collaboration with Surgery Director and/or Business Office Manager, investigate and address any patient complaint, situation or need not met, ensuring complaints and compliments are entered in Quality Calendar;
• Other duties as assigned

Reports to: Christina Tallent, Surgery Director
Shift / Work Hours: Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Hours may be adjusted depending upon clinic/hospital activities.

QUALIFICATIONS: Candidates must have at least two-year’s experience with patient care activities to include prior authorization, referrals and scheduling management. Must have basic knowledge of various quality initiatives and extensive knowledge of electronic medical records.

Licensure / Certification / Registration:

Education: Must have a High School diploma or GED equivalent. College education is preferred but not required. Evidence of training/certifications specific to operations of outpatient/primary care clinic preferred.

Experience: The following experience is preferred:
• Experience in coordinating and managing patient services from registering to discharging, prior authorizations, referrals, scheduling and miscellaneous patient care items.
• Experience working with a variety of professional and para-professional staff in the provision of patient care and services.
• Experience and skill utilizing computer programs (i.e. Word and Excel) and electronic health records
